Older Driver Awareness
What do we do?
Older adult mobility, assessments, and planning may seem like foreign topics but they are regularly addressed by many different organizations throughout Mesa County, utilizing dedicated channels like the Area Agency on Aging and Older Wiser funding to efficiently distribute senior safety information.
The breadth of this work is not in "taking away the keys" of our neighbors and loved ones but in offering insights, education, mobility support, and planning support to promote the freedom of choice within our community and help individuals plan for the next steps in the aging process.
While seniors are still driving, they can benefit greatly from attending a CarFit event. CarFit is a program with local hospital outreach coordinators to support older drivers being more comfortable and safe within their own vehicles.
We also love to share the Yellow Dot program for individuals with medical needs to share those details with First Responders in the event of a crash. The Yellow Dot is a sticker on your window that indicates there is additional medical information in the glove box in a Yellow envelope. To pick up one of these envelopes with an information sheet and sticker, stop by any CarFit event or pick one up for the Motor Vehicle Department of the DMV.
Additionally, there are many insights we can give for supporting conversations on planning for the future. We pride ourselves on collaborating with Grand Valley Transit (GVT) and their Paratransit service as well as sharing available transportation resources for running errands, getting groceries, attending medical appointments, and even for social luncheons from HopeWest PACE.
Finally, we are available to share materials and give presentations at the two separate senior targeted events that take place at the Two Rivers Convention Center: BeaconFest and the Senior Expo.
